I’ve been creating a list of things to keep my thoughts and actions on track with the life I want to live. I’m adding them here so maybe someone else will find them useful. This will be a “forever in progress” list.
1. Nurture and explore your creativity. Everyone can be creative!
2. Be kind to yourself.
3. When trying something new it’s ok to be bad at it. In fact it’s pretty much a certainty that you will be bad at it. Part of the fun is figuring out how to be better at it!
4. Nobody cares. Everyone has their own shit they’re dealing with. You’re only the main character in your story.
5. Make your story fucking epic!
6. Travel. Your anxiety, your depression, your self doubt will never go away. Acknowledge them, sit with them for a bit, but treat them as a passenger on your journey. You’re the driver, act like it. Even when it feels like you can’t.
7. Keep going to therapy, even (especially) when you don’t think you need it anymore.
8. As experienced at Overland Expo there are other creators out there and most are very giving with advice from their own journeys. Seek them out!
9. Find people doing the same things you are. It helps to hear others be excited about the same things you are.
10. Don’t tell, show.
11. Revisit your guiding principles regularly. Remove or adjust what isn’t working for you.
12. Don’t set goals. Set milestones based on your principles and try to do something daily to work towards them.
13. Keep asking yourself if your actions are leading you towards the life you want to have. If the answer is no then for the love of $diety stop doing them!
14. “The greatest remedy for anger is delay. – Seneca”
15. Leave your bubble! It hasn’t served you in a very long time(if ever) so continue taking small steps to expand the bubble.
16. There will never be “a perfect time” to do anything. Just start.
17. “Work fills your pockets, but adventures fill your soul. – Jaime Lyn”
18. Stories aren’t made by sitting at home. Get out there and don’t worry what others think of you. Go back and read number 4.
19. Remember that you have the power to have no opinion.
20. Focus on what you can control, don’t let the rest bother you.
21. Don’t beat yourself up over past decisions. Do the work to come to terms with them, apologize to yourself or the person you wronged/hurt and move on. “The time that passes belongs to death – Seneca”
22. Keep adding songs to your “Emergency Happy” playlist and listen to it regularly because music really helps your mood and mindset!
23. Create for you, not for others. Your tribe will find you.
24. Don’t let negative criticism make you stop this creative journey you’re on.
