Building A Community

Posted on June 25, 2022 by jwalters

I’m writing this at almost 10 pm on a Saturday night so this is going to be a stream-of-consciousness post that may or may not make sense. I can’t sleep and I’ve been restless and distracted for a few days. I’ve been thinking about how to find my spot in the world and I follow a lot of creators on youtube that seem like they’d be pretty awesome people to have a beer with around a campfire. Those are the people I want to surround myself with, those are the people that I want to succeed.

How does one build a community? What’re the requirements? How do you make that community self-sustaining? A creator I follow recently shut down their community space, that I actually didn’t know existed because it was something that was self-sustaining. It was only viable when they interacted with it. There are a few people that I follow and support via Patreon and I want to see them succeed. But how do they do that? I don’t know the answer, but as I sit here and watch their videos, I’m reminded of the joy their videos bring me, and want them to succeed. How can I help them with that?

In my heart, I want to make videos. I want to create things that not only resonate with me but with others. I was going to say that I don’t want to make them with the purpose of making money but I do. I want to put things out in the world that people want to see and would maybe like to pay money for.

I think this journey starts with helping those I follow to be successful in their endeavors. So that’s what I’m going to do!
