Photography Journey: Next Steps

I spent 6 days in New York City in September and it helped me determine where I want to go with my photography. I gravitate towards street photography and have for the last 3-4 years. The “problem” is that I live in a place where I can’t really explore the genre.

I’ve gone to events and even walked the downtowns nearby but there just aren’t that many opportunities to get pics. I have gotten some that I’m really proud of but the trip to NYC really opened my eyes to what I don’t have.

I want to pursue more street photography. More than any other genre right now. There are more opportunities for street photography around me and I’m going to seek those out with much more vigor than before. Going to more events downtown, for example. I submitted 3 photos to a street photography competition and while I didn’t win or place I did get some valuable feedback from the magazine editors.

That made me realize that I’m going to have to open myself up to outside critique, which absolutely terrifies me! It’s the only way I’ll get better. I’m going to start “in the deep end” so to speak by going to the r/photocritique sub reddit. The rules are very clear about the tone and content of the criticism which looks like it weeds out a lot of the bullshit. Hopefully.

If you’d like to see the photos that I submitted, the links are below. If you leave a comment please be kind. It’s really hard opening my work up like this!
